Lawmakers tested for diabetes to raise awareness
Legislators took a timeout from session to promote the importance of diabetes screening.
Lawmakers took advantage of the screenings during Legislative Awareness Day.
Those getting the prick hope the effort will prompt others to do the same.
“It’s a busy day, but I think most lawmakers understand that we have to stay healthy and we have to set a good example,” explains Representative Joan Brady. “Certainly for all South Carolinians, these types of screenings are so very important.”
State officials were also checked for their risk of heart disease and stroke.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control recommends the screening for those 45 or older, unless other factors exist like being overweight or high blood pressure, which would call for an earlier check-up.
