American Diabetes Association – Chasing the Cure
The American Diabetes Association hosted the 9th Annual Chasing the Cure Gala at The Four Seasons Hotel-Saint Louis where guests sported derby-inspired frocks and larger-than-life hats. Gala highlights included the “Run for the Roses” televised live on big screens, a cocktail reception with Derby games and chances on horses, gourmet dinner, silent and live auctions (featuring a 3-year-lease on a 328i BMW sedan courtesy of premier sponsor Autohaus BMW, and local celebrity-designed derby hats) as well as a lively after party at the hotel. Proceeds from the event will benefit The American Diabetes Association”s Camp EDI (Exercise, Diet, and Insulin) and help fund research, education, and advocacy. The camp provides a one-week overnight camping experience for children ages 7-17. In addition to typical camp activities such as swimming, canoeing, and horseback riding, campers participate in daily diabetes education classes where they learn how to manage all aspects of their diabetes, including insulin injections and counting carbohydrates. Internationally known artist Engelbreit graciously donated original artwork for the invitation cover and a limited number of prints of the artwork soon will be available for purchase. Special honorees for the evening were Pasta House owners Kim Tucci and Joe Fresta, who received the Philanthropy Award, the Washington University Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC), acknowledged with the STOP Diabetes Award, and Julio V. Santiago, M.D., posthumously. Scott and Teresa Santiago Turner serves as event chairs. “The support from our honorees and events like Chasing the Cure help us get closer to many of our goals, but especially our effort to send 140 children in our community to diabetes camp each summer,” said Kristi Meyers Gallup, executive director of The American Diabetes Association. “Parents tell us this camp experience is life-changing for their children and one of the best steps in teaching them to address their health issues.” The mission of The American Diabetes Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
